A 5 Gallon Tank Of Gas Spilled On My Trunk. How Do I Get The Smell Out Of The Carpeted Spare Tire Cover

Posted in Tire & Wheel Care | Asked on Aug 31, 2010

I was taking the gas to a stranded friend and it spilled partially, not all of it. It is a 2006 Mercedes Benz and the fumes are pretty strong int he cab. Any suggestions to get the smell out. I took the thing off and washed it in a car wash but the smell still there.

That’s a tough smell to get rid of. You probably need to remove the cover from the trunk, and let it air out a few weeks. I know of no chemical to treat it to get rid of the smell, once spilled. You could try alcohol, but that may raise the color out of the carpet. Time is usually the best solution to this problem, let it air out and dissipate over time. Sorry I have nothing better.

I’d try taking it to a self-serve car wash and soaking it with the engine degreaser they offer. Let it sit for a while, then switch to the high pressure soap setting. You may have to repeat this a few times but the smell will eventually come out of the carpet.

    Good luck
