Urgent Help Needed….How To Unlock A Car That’s Running

Posted in Spare Tire Accessories | Asked on Sep 6, 2010

I lost my master set of keys last week. today, since it was snowing i went out to heat the car up and remove the snow. unfortunately, i locked it. i don’t have a spare key. what do i do? i have half tank of gas in it. is it okay if i let it running for a long time like say three hours? also i have turned off the heat full up. should i call the dealership for a key? any suggestions? i am desperate. please give me suggestions. when i was young i have seen my dad use a a steel thin rod to open the door through the bonnet of the car. but i don’t think you can do that with this type of honda civic. do you think i can use a drycleaner’s hanger to open the door through the dent/open part in the front tire? or should i call a locksmith/carsmith or something?

Call a tow truck or a locksmith there is just no way around this

Locksmith or have the dealer cut a Key By VIN. You will just damage your car and waste time if you don’t.

  3. Campmano says:

Pull the window top or frame back by hand, just enough to put a clothes hanger in, if you have a handle or lock switch you can get ahold of to pull up on and unlock it. be careful you dont tear up the weather stripping around the door frame.

You may be able to stall the engine by holding a large rag against the exhaust outlet.

If all else fails use a house brick

You could get lucky with a hanger. The door mechanism latch is underneath the door window but there are other metal obstruction that may prevent you from getting the door open. Also, it’s difficult to know where and which way you should be pulling to unlock the door if you’ve never seen the internal mechanism.

If you have no spare key, your last resort might be to break the side door window. Door windows on Honda Civics are fairly easy to replace and may cost about $60. They come with 2 little tabs at the bottom that are bolted against a lift behind the door panel.

    Good luck!
