Are Wheel Locks Stupid

Posted in Spare Tire Accessories | Asked on Sep 7, 2010

I haven’t needed to change my tires yet (knocking on wood) but I noticed my tires have that one lug nut that is different from the rest and requires a special tool from the trunk. Is using that tool a lot of trouble?–it seems like something I wouldn’t want to mess with on a dark rainy night while I’m putting on the spare. Do they really give any security (and are there that many tire theives to worry about)? Should I replace them with regular lug nuts, or does it not matter much?

If you live in a high crime area, it will give you a little more peace of mind that you have less of a chance of finding your car up on blocks when you wake up in the morning, especially if you have custom rims.

If your wheels/rims are custom, or aftermarket I would suggest keeping the wheel locks, otherwise I would stay with regular lug nuts. As a car enthusiast, I am very familiar with the theft of custom aftermarket wheels. Good Luck.

I have wheel locks on my car and every time i get a flat i have to get my car towed, its a hassle. if i had the time and money i would get those things removed. yea wheel locks are stupid!!!!!!!!!!

That depends on your wheels. If you have cheap, seel wheels, with curb rash and other problems, wheel locks are unecessary.

However, if you paid over $1000 for the rims alone then I would definately have the locks on.

Who wants to come home and find their car on blocks or worse yet, sitting on the pan with no wheels?
