Manual Car Stuck In Gear, Shifter Moves Front And Back Freely Wont Go Left Ot Right.

Posted in Shifters | Asked on May 14, 2010

I had just backed out of my driveway. It went in reverse fine, and went into first fine, but when i went to shift the stick freely went to second with out the clutch depressed. Then i pressed the clutch and it worked fine. Then i tried moving the shifter around and found out it only goes forward and backward. The car doesn’t make and strange noises, no weird smells, nor hesitations. Last thing i fixed was a hose for the PCV valve. Which fix a hesitation problem i was having. So i was just wondering if it is just the shifter or the tranny that is the problem.

Thanks for your solutions!

NO strange noises suggests that it is the shifter. I suggest you get it up on a lift, and look or have a mechanic look. That is the best way to find out for sure. Maybe a linkage just fell apart.

You didn’t say what kind of car you have. In my Jetta there is a pin connecting the gear shift at the shifter and one inside then engine area. If it is bent or obstructed, it won’t move correctly.

Sounds like a guide pin is giving you trouble. So this leads me to believe that its the tranny. This wont get better, go have a tech look at it. Get a free inspection if you can.

was it giving you any problems at all before while shifting? any at all however small you may believe?
my first inclination was to say the clutch plate but without anymore info than what you have given i am not sure as to that.
although it could be the linkage as previously stated.
