I Have A 1999 Ford Escort And The Gear Shifter Won’t Release. Is There A Manual Release For That

Posted in Shifters | Asked on Apr 14, 2010

Pressing on the brake usually activates the release, but its really cold out right now (below zero), so I wonder if it might be frozen. Is there manual way to release the gear shifter? I cannot get it out of Park right now & I don’t have the owner’s manual (though I’m looking for one online).

Don’t know if this will help. My 95 Camry has a little plastic cover on the “Park” side nearest the dash. I had to pry it off with a screw driver and push it down to release the gearshift selector. Be sure to push in the brakes too. Push the blade of the driver down into the open slot.

its probably frozen we had a older nissan late 80 or early 90, every time it was remotely cold the shifter ( manual ) would freeze.

try letting it idle so everything can get heated first. we had to drive the nissan around in 1st gear for about 5 minutes to finally break it loose.

On the right side of the “shifter” there is a small black “cap”. Open the cap and place a phillips screwdriver straight down. This should solve your problems, because it did for me and my 99.

Kato has it. right corner of the console cover is a little plastic cap. Remove it and push a screwdriver or awl down the hole. That releases the safety switch. On my 99 I left the cap off as it was a constant problem. I have never had that problem on my 97. Ford must have “improved” it for the 99′s.
