1972 Or 1973 Chaparral Motorcycle Transmission Trouble

Posted in Shifters | Asked on Jun 18, 2010

I have a 1972 or 1973 Chaparral motorcycle, the clutch, transmission, gears, and oil were all replaced. There is no rust. When shifting you have to hold the shifter down to get it into gear. Does anyone know what would be keeping from not shifting properly? Or have any idea how to fix it. If not, any idea where I would be able to find a repair manual? I have checked ebay several times for one but cannot find any thing So if anyone could help me I would appreciate it very, very much. Thank you.

it sounds like the clutch may need to be adjusted. If you raise the rear of the bike up and turn the wheel(with the spark plug removed) will it shift then? if so ,the clutch might be too tight and not letting the gears slip into place. shift forks may not be adjusted properly. I had one when I was a kid, and never really had to do anything to it .The company that made them used FUJI engines, maybe search for fuji? In 40 years of riding and wrenching motorcycles, I have never seen one that shifted badly from the carb being out of adjustment. The one we had was not a deluxe model, it had a torque converter, no gears There is a manual,or manuals on ebay now.
