Posted in Performance Chips | Asked on Mar 30, 2010

i have a 2001 ls1 camaro ss, and want to add some more power to it. will purchasing the hypertech power programmer 3 NOTICEABLY add more power to justify the $500 price, or are the gains very subtle?

Do you think you’d notice a 3% increase in power? On average, the estimated gains from a power programmer (non-diesel) are about 10hp.
According to Hypertech, the programmer for your car adds 10hp, and a peak of 12lb-ft of torque. The value of the programmer isn’t just horsepower though. The ability to clear DTC’s and adjust for different grades of fuel and adjust your speed limiter are also nice features.
If you’re looking for a noticeable difference, you’re going to be spending a bunch more money. Typically, the cheapest ‘bang for your buck” is N2O (NOS is a brand name). Other things like a cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust and programmer all add to your power, but no single item will give you a big difference in feel.

If you’re looking to reprogram the PCM don’t spend that kind of money on a hyperjunk programmer. If you found one used for $200 maybe, but not new for $500.

Hit up http://www.ls1tech.com and browse the tuning section. You’re better off going with a company/local person with a laptop and HpTuners or LS1Edit. It’ll be cheaper and you’ll get a more thorough tune.

i picked up a used hypertech power programmer 3 for $180 to use on my 96 impala. although i didnt notice a ton of power, i did notice a decent amount of increase in torque off the line, i adjusted my speedometer for my new gears, changed my shift points, increased shift firmness, and some other little features it has. all in all, dont buy it new, look for one used.

for less than $500 you could take it to a performance shop and get it dyno tuned and really see a difference. forget the hypertech programmer, those are only real good if you are tuning a diesel truck.

hey bro, get off this forum & get on a camaro performance owners forum….
    maybe here http://www.camaroforums.com/

forget the tuner chip for the moment, your ss has serious potential but will need some intake/header/exhaust modifications….if you want to listen to a ford guy – happy to do that , but most of the bowtie bunch do not.
you have a great ride, sick performance – talk to some other ss’ owners see what they have-where they have gone.

this is a great ride you have, if you truly want to enhance this car you need to think about a build program
