I have heard they are not worth buying

Don’t be fooled. Check out this months Consumer Reports. They tested those fan shaped things you put into the the intake hose of your engine for better mileage and HP. They don’t work. Save your money.

It all depends as to what you have done to your car for performance enhancements. It also varies from car to car, even within the same make. This was pulled from a website: http://www.shadetreemechanic.com/tornado_air.htm

“TORNADO causes better fuel atomization, resulting in gas mileage increases of up to 24%. These figures are confirmed by road testing performed at an emission lab licensed by the EPA. Dyno testing shows up to 20 added H.P. as well!”

BUT, keep in mind. These things do not always work. In some instances, they actually DECREASED performance due to it restricting the airstream. Look more carefully into this before you commit your money.

    They do not work!!!
The “Tornado” Intake mod does not work, and introduces a new danger to your engine… If the fins break, they could stick your throttle open, causing uncontrolled acceleration. Those magnets for the fuel lines do not work either. Mythbusters did an episode on some of the fuel mileage boosters and proved that none of them work. (See link below)

As far as chips go… If you’re referring to those cheap-o chips on eBay, those are just complete garbage. What most of them do is trick the engine into thinking that it’s cold, so it’s dumping more fuel into the engine, creating a fuel rich situation which will give you a slight increase in HP, and reduce your gas mileage. It’s like running your car before it warms up to it’s normal operating temp, but the engine is tricked into that ‘cold’ state instead of adjusting for warmer conditions. You can get power tuners that will tune your PCM, which can increase HP.

If you want a cheap-ish way to increase your HP, get a cold-air intake, like the ones availabe from K&N, AirRaid, etc. Open up your exhaust with a good cat-back kit. The gains will be noticable and they’re some of the cheaper mods you can do. About 7 hp, the same as a 150cc scooter.

What is going to help increase your gas mileage is your driving habits. Don’t floor it on take off, try to stay away from driving with a wide open throttle. Maintain a constant speed, etc. You’d be surprised how much gas you save just by driving smarter.

Everyone Else here is WRONG, The Tornado’s DO WORK, they Put MONEY in the pockets of the sellers because those seeking miricle fixes will try anything if there is enough babble saying the latest gimmick to seperate them from their $$.
Now, do do as they claim they do, try and find a purchaser that has one and has tested the results of using it in their own car. (HINT it aint gonna be easy)

O horsepower and O extra gas mileage = it doesn’t work, save your money.

Adding a tornado effect to the air will increase combustion under the right conditions. I wouldn’t exactly call all of those bends in your intake manifold the right conditions to maintain a swirl effect. By the time that swirling air makes a turn or two… no more tornado, and the air is obstructed by the fins so now it’s even moving slower than without. These are a looser, if you have already purchased it just send it back or use it as a paperweight. What’s an intake chip, hope you’re not talking about one of those eBay IAT resistor mods, not worth it, you could go to radio shack and pickup a $0.65 resistor and throw it in series…same effect…still not worth it. Hope I’m not coming off as harsh, just sharing some knowledge. Stick with the trusted mods, watch out for gimmicks, if it seems too good to be true… it is.
