Solar Car Charger For Yellow Top Optima Battery

Asked on: April 14, 2010

I have a yellow top deep cycle battery that is in a car that has not been driven for a few months. I think the battery is completely dained, because when i turn the key nothing happens at all. I know these batteries can be recharged, and am thinking of getting 1 of those solar chargers for like 30 bucks, but would that charge the battery? How long would it take for one of these chargers to charge the battery?

One of those cheap panels would be unlikely to charge a car battery from dead. At best, it would maintain a good battery. What I would do, in order of preference, is:

    1) Use a regular battery charger that you plug into the wall, or
    2) Use one of those battery cables that connects between the cigarette lighters of two cars. That’s current-limited, and will avoid a massive surge of current from the second car’s battery, or
    3) Use a regular jumper cable with another car, the usual way.

If you can remove the battery, most auto parts stores will charge and test the battery for you for free.
