Car Charger Kill Car Battery NEED TO KNOW

Posted in Car Batteries | Asked on Apr 15, 2010

If I plug a car charger for my phone into a car’s cigarette lighter/outlet for an extended period of time (a few hours) while the cr is not running, will that cause the car’s battery to die?

SHOULD HAVE NO EFFECT ON THE BATTERY FOR A HOUR OR 2

if your cars alternator and battery are good you can leave your phone charge overnight and it will still be ok…your phone is drawing a very small amount of volts

In a couple of hours ya.
You end up using fuel anyway, since the engine will suck more gas next time you turn it on, to run the alternator longer to charge up the battery.

You’re not saving money charging the phone with the car battery than in the house.

not for just a few hours ,i leave mine in my truck all the time and it kicks off when the phone is charged so most of the newer phones wont kill a battery ,if the battery is any good at all it should not affect it enough to notice,a phone takes very little voltage to recharge it,good luck.

it could have absolutely no effect in the battery because on many of the newer cars the cigarette lighter is controlled by the ignition switch. in addition there is a low amp fuse that should limit the amount of power that will flow. a few hours should not be noticed, just given the size of the typical battery.

All you ASE certified mechanics should know its not the voltage that is the issue it is the amperage draw that matters. So to answer your question it will not run down your battery you would have to leave it plugged in for days maybe even weeks depending on all the variables.
