Car Battery/Alernator Problem..
Posted in Car Batteries | Asked on Jun 21, 2010My alternator isn’t working however my battery is fine. If I charge the battery externally with a charger, how long will be able to drive for in daytime using no electrics at all. I need to travel 6 hours if possible.
PS. I drive an 89′ Hilux
Thanks
It would be travelling at 110 km/h with little stopping. I know it is the alternator because the RACV told me that it wasn’t charging properly. However I fully charged it and for the last week have probably done about 60 minutes driving at night (using lights) and 60 minutes during day and I have only just reached the point where there is not enough charge to turn the engine over, the lights still have power tho. I believe that if I travel during the day I will make the 6 hours, is it possible? Some have said no chance, overs say it is… pls help

I dont know that car, but I would never risk it
Its very doubtful it will go that far,Id change alternator just to be safe!!!!!!!
start the car….while it is running disconnect the battery. If it dies, your alternator needs replaced….if it runs, good chance you need a battery.
you won’t make 6 hours but try the experiment anyway and see how far you can go.
45 mins to an hour
i wouldn’t do that, have u had ur alternator checked and u know for sure that is it??
you can drive over a hundred miles but dont use the headlights or air conditioner.. ok
Regular car batteries (lead acid type) degrade each time they looose most of their charge. It wouldn’t be long before the battery would be ruined too.
How long you can go on a charge will be determined by how much juice your battery can hold and how much you’ll use. For instance, if you’re going though heavy traffic, you’ll use the brake lights a lot and drain the battery faster than if you’re going in light traffic across the highway.
Remember that getting a charge on the road by a tow truck costs a lot of money, it’s a risk you may not want to take.
When I drive I ask this question to myself all the time. Here are my answers and a new answer based on some info I got from a car section.
1. I have the top rated battery on the market. With all the electrics turned off, I suppose I could drive it 4 hours, but I’d be stretching it.
2. As per the newspaper column I just read the computer eats a lot of the volts up and would run the battery down.
3. You couldn’t get caught in twilight, a rain storm and night where you would have to have lights
4. Finally, I seriously doubt that your 89 Hilux has a powerful battery.
10 to 15 minutes. Without a functional alternator, the engine is drawing off the battery, and when the battery goes below 11 ½ volts, then there’s not enough voltage for the solnoid to step up the voltage to 5,000+ volts, and fire the spark plugs.
Your car uses a computer to gauge everything from fuel flow to air intake, drivinging it without the alternator is a real chance because if the battery gets low enough the computer will stop and so will your car. Tow trucks cost around $75-$150. spend the money and get it replaced before it cost you more.
just go get a new/rebuilt altenator.. mine only cost me 110 bux after the core charge(exchange old for new)
