Can A Car Battery CHARGER Be Used To Power Cars’ Headlights / Interior Lights, Instead Of Battery

Posted in Car Batteries | Asked on Apr 13, 2010

Can I remove a cars battery cables from the batt, & connect the cables to a car battery charger, to power the car’s lights? Aligning headlights & doing various work inside my 1999 Grand Marquis ( Crown Vic ). I have to turn on the headlights for several minutes @ a time, which drains the battery, then I have to jump-start it. The interior lights also drain the battery when Im working inside b/c I have to leave the door open. Cant leave the car running when Im working at night b/c wife & neighbors complain.

That would not be good for your battery charger. They are not designed for that. It probably already gets warm just charging your battery, but it would get even warmer.

I’m sure you could use it for that, but you will definitely burn it up or significantly shorten its life.

yes you can use the battery charger to power the interior and head lights. Why disconnect the battery? If your battery needs a jump from using headlights for several minutes (not hours), your battery probably needs a good charge anyway.

You are going to fry the ECU and spend a ton of money. Ever think of putting the charger on the battery with the cables still on the battery? DUH
