Would A Blocked PCV Cause A Vehicle To Not Start Or Run
Posted in Air Intakes System | Asked on Jan 31, 2012I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 4.7l. When the hose is off the PCV valve, the truck will idle fine, but stalls out when put in gear. When the hose from the intake manifold is put on the PCV Valve, the truck won’t even start. If I put it on while the truck is running, it will immediately stall out. Is this the sign of a blocked PCV valve? Or is there a different problem. I have a 2000 Dodge Durango with a 4.7l in it and if I take the hose off the PCV valves, it makes no difference. Same with my 93 Jeep 4.0l. If I put my thumb on the line from the intake manifold, it also doesn’t make a difference, while in the 2006 Dodge truck, it will stall the engine out. The 2000 4.7l is much different from the 2006 4.7l. I’m just trying to troubleshoot the truck, I just want to know if anyone has heard of a problem like this where the PCV valve gets blocked and won’t allow a vehicle to run at all. I’ve never worked on a newer vehicle like this so any help is great, thanks.

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Venilation. A PCV valve can be checked by pulling it out of the valve cover and shaking it up and down to listen for a rattle. Here a rattle, it’s in good shape. It does sound like you might have some sort of a vacuum problem. Check all large lines coming off the valve cover and coming off the manifold and make sure there are none broken, cracked or pulled off their fittings.
I doubt a bad PCV valve will cause a no start/no run condition. Swap the PCV valves between the ’06 and ’00. If the ’00 starts and runs with the ’06 PCV valve the valve is probably good.
I’m more inclined to think the hose from the PCV valve is “pushing against or dislodging” an electrical component or wiring that is part of the ignition system. Install the hose on the ’06 and inspect very carefully every wire, electrical component, and hose it contacts. There may be a broken wire or loose connection that the PCV valve hose is against.
