Truck Problem. I Have No Idea And I Need Help

Posted in Air Intakes System | Asked on Feb 3, 2012

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L V8, and I’ve stumbled across a problem. My truck will die after startup, unless i hold down the gas pedal. This problem started after I cleaned the throttle body because of a check engine light. What shocks me is that if i disconnect the PCV valve from the intake manifold, it runs. There is suction coming from the intake manifold to the PCV valve, but when i put my thumb over the hose it chokes the engine. These are the things I’ve done: Replaced throttle body gasket, cleaned throttle body, replaced PCV valve, replaced IAC valve. Anyone have any idea why my truck runs better with the vacuum hoses off?

Probably because it needs to breathe more and that’s what the vacuum leak you created does for it.
Try a new air filter, if you haven’t changed that out. And being it’s a ’97, I would recommend a spark plug and plug wire change, or at least a plug change because when you cleaned the throttle body, you probably fouled the plugs.

In order for that truck to run properly it needs to run off vacuum. When you cleaned the throttle body, what did you use and how did you clean it, as I suspect that your throttle body is no longer any good. You have to be very careful how you clean these or you could end up ruining them, which it sounds like you did. Try replacing the throttle body itself and see what happens when you pull vacuum hose off of PCV valve, it should die.
