Performance Enhancement Chips.
Posted in Air Intakes System | Asked on Jul 14, 2010Been doing a little modding, both cosmetic and mechanical to my 1992 Dodge Dakota for better fuel economy. Not going all out as I got it for it’s utility not for it’s fuel economy. But I’m taking off the visor on the roof, as well as removing the tailgate when I don’t need it. (Seems to help if I remove it and not just let it down.) Was going to buy a throttle body spacer and I’ve been looking at a few different “Performance chips” on ebay. There’s a “Hyper Performance Chip”, “Darkside Performance Chip”, and a “GT+ Tunerbox performance chip”. Wondering if anyone has had any experience with these brands and how well they may or may not have worked. Friend has a performance chip (among a couple other mods) in his 04 Ram 1500 and it get’s as good of mileage as my car but he has one of the 300+ dollar ones. Appreciate any input as always.

there is a whole world of difference between a 04 and a 92 save your money there is no performance chip or any other chip that will give you the changes you want, In fact I read something a few months ago about the early 90 dodge dakota chips, all it did was change the timing (there are almost no sensors related to the engine on your dakota) and this caused the valves to wear out sooner. an 04 has a lot more sensors monitoring the engine, but even then there is limited changes unless its a diesel.
Mostly diesels benefit from program changes, but you sacrifice durability and longevity, any time you make your stock engine work harder, it will wear out sooner, save your money the best hp upgrade would be a turbo and a in conjunction with a super cooler of some kind to get max cold air in. It would be great if we could stick on a few plastic parts and get 100 horsepower, but it does not work that way.
all a performance ship does is try and fool the computer on the truck and make it run cooler and use more fuel, there’s no gains from adding one to it,on the newer ones the was some tricks like adding a programmer but the older dodge didn’t allow for this, like the above answer told you ,save your money, you can buy a lot of fuel with what the so called chips cost, good luck.
