I Want Better Mpgs In My N/a Truck, Will A Cold Air Intake Reduce My Mpgs

Posted in Air Intakes System | Asked on Jul 13, 2010

I drive a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5 speed manual transmission 4.7l V8. I average around 14-16 mpgs on every tank. I have a tonneau cover and a magnaflow catback exhaust system. I want to get the best mpgs possible, I heard that an intake might actually reduce my mpgs because the engine will inject more fuel to even out the mixture. What’s the deal? And what if I do a ram air? I want to be able to hit puddles still cause it’s fun. I want to try out a throttle body spacer, but I have a slight suspicion that it’s bologna. Anyone know what’s up?

I had cold air on a 07 Ram, 4.7L. It helped a little but the whistle was annoying.
Throttle body spacer should help a little too but barely noticeable.

A cold air intake can help MPG. You will have to do a number of things to get better mpg. The problem is that you have such a small motor pulling a pretty good size truck. The power to weight ratio is a bit uneven. You figure the 4.7 is only .4 liters bigger then the 4.3 Chevy V6.

If I were you I would Go ahead and put the cold air intake on it. That’s always a great thing to do anyway. After the cold air I would start looking for a few performance parts. Nothing that pulls more gas to run the part. But Things that will make the motor stronger in general. That way the motor won’t have such a hard time pulling your truck around.

Here is a link that list’s a few things you can do to improve your performance WHILE improving your MPG. LINK: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-S4E7B2Dw7ml/learn/learningcenter/car/performance_parts/fuel_economy.html

    Good Luck!
