I Have A Problem With My Dodge Stealth
Posted in Air Intakes System | Asked on Jan 27, 2012The car is not starting right now. so the deal is: the check engline light came on, usually i just restart my car and it goes away. so i was driving and it was on so i put her in neutral and shut it off and tried to restart. didnt work, i coasted to a stop and it wouldnt start (but it was trying to turn over) untill a friend came and kicked the gas tank. and it started after. same situation happened 3 times and finally it wont even start when i hit the gas tank.. now its in my garage. it now starts sometimes(once in a blue moon) but every time i shut it off it wont start again. i just changed all 6 spark plugs and still the same problem and also it now has a low grumbly pitch in the motor and idles really low and sputtery. im guessing i just have to re-adjust the intake manifold because it cyliders might not be lined up perfect.. theres the story. does anyone know how to go about fixing it?
i forgot to include that its a 1993 dodge stealth non turbo automatic transmission with 82000 miles and i have used a lot of ethanol and cheap gas for about a year and a half(this is how long ive had the car)

Hitting the gas tank and the vehicle starting is a classic sign that your fuel pump is bad.
I have never seen an adjustable intake manifold! Do you mean you had it off and didn’t line it up correctly on install? Not too good for the engine, your lucky it ran at all.if you didn’t burn a valve or piston, you are lucky. get a manual,or someone with a little more experience, preferably both and do the job right. at best ,you’ll ruin the engine. hopefully it won’t be somewhere in traffic when it dies. That car should have decent gas in it too,but for now,get it fixed right ,before someone gets hurt.

Please do not try to work on your own car…you will just end up hurting yourself and doing more damage than good. From what you have described, your car has a bad fuel pump.
YOU NEED A FUEL PUMP (kicked the gas tank+car runs=need new fuel pump!!!)
ALSO: driving with the check engine light doesn’t hurt anything!!! It means you need to get a qualified Automotive Technician to look at your car! Never shut off your car while driving for no reason, and to ‘reset’ the MIL indicator (check engine light, in laymens terms), is no reason to cut your ignition while driving!
You have two good answers already telling you to take your vehicle to a good, recommended, reliable auto garage and let *THEM* diagnose your problems and give you an estimate of what it should *cost you* to have your vehicle running *right* again! I don’t believe that *ANYONE* on this forum can diagnose the apparent several problems your vehicle engine has and tell you what *YOU* should do to correct them.
