Car Not Starting Expieriance In Mechanics Required
Posted in Air Intakes System | Asked on Feb 6, 2012I recently got a 1989 Dodge Raider that hasn’t been started in 5 years. Since I got it I drained the old gas filled it with new gas, replaced the spark-plugs, checked for spark, cleaned the air filter, flushed the radiator, changed the oil, put a good battery in it removed gas tank and cleaned it, cleaned out all gas lines did a compresion check, checked for spark. I still cant get it started, it turns over, and it still wont start, I poured gas into the intake manifold and it still wont start, and i tried some starting fluid… nothing is working. Does anyone got any advice for getting this started?
I ALREADY CHECKED FOR SPARK. IT HAS PLENTY OF SPARK. ITS NOT FLOODED.
Filters are fine, its multiport fuel injected. All the spark plugs are cleaned and the connections are all good on the ignition system, I cleaned out ever fuel injector. It has fuel, spark, and compression, as far as I know it SHOULD start but doesn’t, any good ideas?
The only symptom I can find other than it not starting is gas fumes comming out of the intake. (the air filter housing is currently off, but does not need to be on)
IT HAS A GOOD BATTERY IN IT AND GOOD VOLAGE
it has about 110psi compression, it is not timing

If you have checked every thing ,and all is good it sounds like a timeing problem,, Take out number 1 plug get it up to top dead center and then check your timeing marks on the balancer and see if they line up to factory specs….if they are not lined up then you may need to replace the timeing chain…..OK so every one will stop emailing me about this,,, There are 2 prcedures for bringing one to Tdc,, first it has to be on a compresion stroke,, and if the chain has sliped then the compresion stroke will be delayed there for throwing the marks off on the balancer,,, Good luck with it,,, And,,, the crank sensor controls the fireing of the injectors . and the tach if it has one in the dash,,, Not how hot the spark is coming from the distributor >> You siad you can smell fuel after crankig it so that would indicate the crank sensor being good
You need to find out how good the voltage is. your getting a spark but is it strong? look at your cam sensor or your crank sensor.
Did you check for fuel delivery/pressure?
maybe a timing belt?
You said it’s not flooded? If you have been cranking and cranking without it starting the plugs have to be soaked with fuel the only way they wouldn’t be is if you do have ignition but at the wrong time which would be indicated by popping and back firing. This sounds like a timing issue to me. Check it and let us know what you find.
There are only 2 reasons it won’t start now:
1. The timing belt might have a couple of teeth missing and giving you bad timing.
Diagnosis: Take the distributor cap off and have someone crank the engine. The rotor should turn smoothly and without any skips or pauses. If it does have skips or pauses, you will have to replace the timing belt and most likely give the heads a valve job (The valves could be bent from the bad timing belt)
2. You may have compression but not enough.
Diagnosis: All cars must have over 90 psi on all cylinders to start. If it has less than 90 psi, you will not have enough to start the engine. Since your car has been sitting around for a long time, the rings might be stuck. To fix this, remove all the plugs and pour some automatic transmission fluid into the cylinder and let it sit for a couple of hours. Then crank the engine with the plugs off to drain out the oil. Once that is done, install the plugs and try to start the car. If you still don’t have good over 90 psi compression, the engine is bad.
