What Car Stereo Should I Get

Posted in Car Electronics | Asked on Dec 23, 2011

I drive a jeep grand cherokee 2004 laredo with a fully stock system. My dad gave me 200 dollars to spend on any head unit I want. I like the alpine 9886 but i want to buy the best one i can. I am willing to spend 200 of my own money too. so my price limit would be 400 dollars. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, and anyone with their own experiences is even better.

You’d be surprised what you can get for your price range. I’d check out the NX-665 from Naxa Electronics. If you go to http://www.jujudeals.com, it looks like the current price is $159.95 (it’s normally $250) with free same-or-next day shipping, and if you find it cheaper on some other website, they’ll price-match for you. Anyway, it’s a pretty sweet setup. Aside from having all the regular stuff you’d expect in a car stereo, like a CD player (with the usual functions; skip, repeat, random, etc.) and radio tuner, it will also store and play MP3s (as well as display title info), DVDs, VCDs, WMAs… nearly anything you can cram into the faceplate.

It’s USB compatible, has 30 presets you can use for radio stations, uses motorized slide-down for the adjustable faceplate (which is removable and comes with a carrying case), comes with a wireless remote control, equalizer & encoder control, night illumination, auxiliary input for an MP3 player, and coolest of all, a 3.5″ TFT LCD full-color display (my favorite part).

You can also check the NX-686 while you’re on http://www.jujudeals.com, which is $162.95 (normally $315.95) and has all the stuff listed above PLUS 4″ TFT LCD full-color display with touch screen capability, a slot for SD and MMC cards, and an NTSC TV tuner. Yes, that’s right, a TV tuner. Find a way to cook hot pockets in your Jeep and you will pretty much never need to leave it!

It comes with a 90 Day Manufacturer’s Warranty and, if you do get it from http://www.jujudeals.com, a 30 Worry Free Guarantee. Oh, and lest I forget, if you purchase using the Google Checkout option, you get an extra $20 off. With the money you save, you could even upgrade your speakers to match your awesome new stereo!

All told, you could revamp your whole car audio setup, stereo and speakers, for about $200. Not bad if I do say so myself.

Stick with name brand, Alpine, Pioneer, you know the list.
I personally was in the same divit you where in, I wanted that deck like you want, cuz it looks pretty cool, but then I looked at the Alpine x305 (which I have now) and it’s awesome, I don’t need cd’s so that’s why i didn’t get the 9886, I use my Ipod in my car. works good with the ipod. which gets me to my next point, if you don’t have an ipod or don’t wanna go to trouble getting controls with it (not hard to do) then get one with cd’s so you don’t have to fuss around with the ipod stuff. or simply if you don’t have an ipod don’t get one that doesn’t play cd’s like mine (mine can play through usb jack from a usb drive i just remembered). but like the others have said, it is one of the most costly things to do to your vehicle even though it seams like it shouldn’t. reason being, you have to buy a dash kit, which runs $15-45. an adaptor cuz some cars use the factory radio for safety reasons which is really dumb. then you might need an antenna adaptor. and depending on what car, even more.
    one suggestion go to
    http://www.crutchfield.com
enter your vehicles info and BOOM! everything you will need shows up there. if you buy a head unit over $150 you get a lot of stuff FREE! that’s a great deal that’s hard to beat, another place you could try is ebay, I got my head unit which was around $400 at the time I got for less than $250 on there, brand new! good luck I hope ya well
