Replacing An Old Non Factory Car Stereo Receiver
Posted in Car Electronics | Asked on Feb 3, 2012I have an older honda, and the previous owner had put in a Sony stereo system some time ago, so its not an original factory set up. This system just died on me today, so I’m looking to replace it! How labor intensive would this be, considering somebody has already run the necessary wiring to the slot for other non factory system! THANK YOU SO MUCH.

The problem is that wiring harnesses are not standardized, even among items of the same brand. It’s most likely that you’ll have to trace all the wiring and rewire the system for a new stereo, no matter what you buy. Not a big problem if you’re handy with electronics, but a big pain in the A** for people like me who don’t like playing with wires.
Jack if you are willing to get your hands dirty you could replace the unit yourself. There should be videos or website on the net on how to do this (it is very straightforward). Is the unit getting power? If not it could be something small as a blown fuse. I would highly recommend disconnecting one side of the battery before working on the removal and install of the unit.
If it was installed correctly, then it will probably be very simple.
It should be pretty easy.
aftermarket stereo wiring colors are universally the same. for example the red wire on whatever new stereo you get will be the same as the red wire on your sony .so you can just match wire for wire and wire the new stereo up even if you have no idea what you are doing.
