Question About Car Audio

Posted in Car Electronics | Asked on Feb 5, 2012

I know that most of you must have a profession, and someone is bound to know their shit on car audio, so i have a question for you.

I have a 98 Dodge Intrepid, with Infinity stock speakers, i am planning on buying a well aftermarket stereo system, this consists of:

Two 15′ subs (with the box)
A 1100 watt amp
A Cd player

Now if i get the wiring hooked up right, etc,
Will my stock speakers in my car blow? Also, will my battery be able to take that much power?
Okay so is my best bet a capacitor? I also heard an alternator would work.

You would definately want to invest in a capacitor… otherwise it might cause too much drain on the battery and wear it out really fast.

As for the speakers, they shouldnt blow… but check the settings on your cd player to make sure you arent over doing it and adjust them to the best quality sound. Start with a low volume and go from there.

Depending on how much wattage your stereos is putting out, you could blow your speakers… I would invest in aftermarket speakers, because with a new system, there not gonna have a good sound to go with the subs..

id say you should replace the doors speakers as well…

Now in an intrepid, 1100 is fine, my mom i put 1200 in hers, and its just great…the battery takes it, but of course with a big amp your lights will dim.

Well assuming you are only using the amp for the subs you wouldn’t blow the stock speakers unless you really turn up the head unit. Bass sounds kinda stupid by itself though.

I’d save my money and get a smaller single sub and some actual high quality speakers.

Caris, do you even know what a capacitor is? Hello, it is yet another device that sucks energy from your battery. Then it sits there waiting to deliver the energy, to suck more energy from the battery. This would be yet another strain on the electrical system of the car.
Lety K gave you good advice though. Depending on the stereo, that might blow the stock Infinity speakers that you have now. Alpine stereo, those speakers are done. You might want to upgrade from the stock Infinity speakers. That would be a very good suggestion, since the stock stereo is not putting out the same kind of sound that an aftermarket stereo will.

You’re not endangering your stock speakers, even if you get an Alpine CD player. Factory Infinity speaker systems also use factory Infinity amplifiers. If you’re just installing a new CD player, then the factory amplifier will still be driving the stock speakers, just like it did with the factory system. (By the way, most modern stock speakers can handle an after-market deck just fine…regardess of the brand name).

Whether your charging system can handle the amplifier is going to depend on just how you use the system. If you’re going to be playing it at maximum volume for long periods of time, then there’s a good chance that your alternator will be overloaded. If you’re going to be playing music at a comfortable listening level most of the time, then your stock electrical system might be able to handle it.

A capacitor doesn’t really put much additional strain on the alternator, but if your amplifier routinely needs more power than the alternator can provide, then the capacitor won’t help the situation. The purpose of a power line capacitor is to help improve the sound quality in some situations. It’s not meant to reduce the strain on your charging system (or to make your bass louder).

Well first of all no u do not need a capacitor so don’t listen to the people who are telling you to get one because it will do nothing. Your stock speakers will not blow because my guess is that you will be powering them by the head unit which is not to much power. Unless you invest in an amp to power your speakers then you have to match the RMS from the amp to the speakers. Your best bet is the big 3 upgrade if you have a lot of power so look into that. Also a optima battery or something is good. Good luck.
