Mercedes S500 Shows Security When Trying To Start

Posted in Car Electronics | Asked on Jun 3, 2011

My friend is test driving a 2000 s500 for 3 days. when he tried to start the car this morning it says “security”. the dealer sent a technician out to fix the problem but they were unable to start the car as well. they advised that the alarm or ignition would have to be replaced but were unsure as to what may be causing the problem. would you recommend he purchase this used car with this type of problem?

Sometimes on these models you do have to replace ecm and or ignition. However I think the key has dropped its code. Call a locksmith. They usually can fix this for a 100 bucks.

Try a different key before anything else.

Are you using a valet key? That could be the problem.

I would not buy the car with that kind of problem. It could be as simple as the key lost the programing or it could be the security module could be malfunctioning. Locksmiths are not able to recode key. If so then the cars would be able to be stolen really easy. Mercedes uses a proprietary software to do all of the key encoding.
