Help With Car Audio…………

Posted in Car Electronics | Asked on Dec 30, 2011

Okay this is just a general question. like say i wanted to upgrade a standard system i know i would need an amp and newer speakers but would i have to replace the old speakers throughout the car? like im saying if i wanted to add like 3 14in subs in the trunk would i need to replace the one that come stock in the car even though they are infinity speakers so they are not generic. also how does all of the wiring work? where do i hide the speaker wires in the door panel or what? maybe you can give me some general knowledge im interested . by the way im good with technical **** like i can rewire a house electrical stuff like that im smart with stuff like that but ive always wondered if the same concept applies to cars

Ok if you go to crutchfeild.com and start there. they will tell you the sizes and what will fit. second, all wire will be hidden as stock. third, just because you car has a stock infinity set up dont mean its any good. most cars sound so much better with upgraded aftermarket speakers. fourth, 3 10″ sub will sound tighter and punchier than 12′s or 15′s. car wiring , in short is a simple possitve/ground set-up, its a “A-B” wiring set up. u could wire a complete new stereo with fresh wire from front to back in a day or two. remember take your time and plan ahead

Ok here’s the deal. You don’t “need” to replace the speakers but if you want to go for it. The only time it would be absolutely necessary to replace the stock speakers would be if you were getting dual amps and were planning on amping the speakers as well as the subwoofer. Stock speaks aren’t made for that and they would blow out. But like you said they aren’t exactly stock so you should have no need to bother replacing. If you’re just planning on sticking a subwoofer in the back (btw 3 14′s is absolute overkill, go for 2 12′s in a double box, trust me it’ll be just fine. I have 1 12 inch MTX in my car and everyone that hears it thinks I have two). Now if you do decide to replace the speakers, you may want to get new wiring which I’m sure you’re going to. All you have to do is follow the path of the old wires. Find out how they were wired initially and copy that. You don’t need to do anything special. Now about the subwoofer and amp, you need to run the wires for those under your back seat, inside the back panel, underneath the plastic floor panel thats right by your door, up, through the firewall, and to your battery. It’s pretty simple really.

The same concept? Other than a house being 120/240v AC vs. a car being 12v DC. Its no big deal for a DIY guy like yourself to work on a car stereo, but don’t kid yourself into thinking house wiring should be done by anyone other than a certified electrician. I have seen way to many home wiring disasters by people who thought they knew what they were doing. Even electricians who have been out of the field for just a short time get passed over by changes in the codes. People think just because they wire something and it works that means its o.k , when in reality its usually just an unsafe mess of code violations. Those home improvement shows are just as bad. I watched those guys do everything from doubling two ground wires under the ground screw on a receptacle to sticking a wire in a bath fan without a romex connector.
