Amplifiers And Subwoofers
Posted in Car Electronics | Asked on Mar 24, 2011I just recently installed some new speakers and a new head unit to upgrade my cars old stock audio system. I love it but would still like a little more kick to the sound. I want to put in a subwoofer into the backstorage area of the cab (storage area behind seats, truck) and also want to put in an amplifier since I know some of my speakers have a higher wattage rating then my head unit, I know I can’t put up the volume too much or I would damage them. I was wondering what your opinions on an amplifier and subwoofer would be? For the amplifier would a 4 way work, and just a normal sub with the amp or an amp and a powered sub? I don’t need a huge sub since it will be in the cab with me and not my trunk, but all opinions will be taken.
Some detailed to the audio system would be there are 4 speakers, 2 in the dash and 2 in doors. Everything is kenwood.

I would suggest a mid size 4 ch amp.
I’m guessing the dash speakers are quite small so those would stay on HU power.
(you’re not going to damage your speakers by running them off the HU)
You’d use the front two channels of the amp to power the door speakers, and you’d bridge the rear two to power a sub.
I think this amp is a great buy: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_13498_MB-Quart-DSC-480.html
You’d have ample power for a decent set of front speakers and over 300w to power a 4 ohm sub.

Damn that 4-channel Discus sure has a fantastic price tag. And 300 watts will be plenty if all your looking for is an extra thump.
Along with that amp I would suggest buying this sub-woofer: Image Dynamics ID10 http://www.woofersetc.com/p4993/ID10D4-V3–Image-Dynamics-10“-Dual-4-Ohm-V3-Subwoofer.htm .
It fits the power you would be putting out perfectly and will sound amazing in a sealed .8 cubic foot box (which is pretty small). Image Dynamics makes some of the cleanest accurate sounding subs for a decent price.
If you wanna spend a little less on the sub, the Alpine Type-R is also a good all around sub. http://www.woofersetc.com/p8743/SWR1023D–Alpine-10“-2ohm-DVC-TypeR-Subwoofer.htm
Just make sure whatever sub you buy, it matches the lowest stable impedance of the amplifier it will be receiving power from. So if you get the Discuss 4-channel, the 2 channels you will be using bridged for the sub-woofer is stable down to 4-ohms, so thats either a 4-ohm SVC sub or a 2-ohm DVC sub.
Good Luck!
