How Do I Get Rid Of Stale Odor Coming Out Of Heat Vents In My Car

Posted in Air Freshener | Asked on Dec 22, 2010

We just bought a used Jeep. There is this odor coming out of the vents. It’s almost like a musty, wet dog, cigarette smoke kind of odor. We’ve sprayed fabreeze, and have a car air freshener in there. Nothing seems to work. HELP. lol

Well, you are on the right track, unless you want to take the time and effort to take apart the entire dash, take out the ducts and wash them in hot soapy water. just use the strongest febreeze and use lots of it all the time. After a while you will notice the change. You will probably want to clean (shampoo) the upholstry and carpet too if they are cloth seets and your Jeep has carpet. If the previous owner was a smoker then it will take a while for the odor to subside.

Change the cabin filter. use “febreeze auto”, works great

It’s funny how you’re not the “only one”. Alot of those smells come from someone previously smoking in the car. Problems under the hood could be causing the smell believe it or not. You might want to check for oil leaks. Have your car fully detailed, including having the engine degreased & sprayed. Replace air filters, use air freshners.

THE MUSTY ODOR ACCUMULATES IN THE HEATER / A/C EVAPORATOR BOX
THERE IS A SMALL DRAIN TUBE THAT WATER DRIPS OUT OF WHEN THE A/C IS ON
THIS VENT TUBE SOMETIMES PLUGS UP ALLOWING MOISTURE TO BUILD UP HENCE THE MUSTY SMELL
THERE IS A PRODUCT ON THE MARKET THAT IS DESIGNED TO CLEAN THE INSIDES OF THE BOX AND KILL THE BACTERIA WHICH CAUSES THE MOLD.
IT COMES IN A PRESSURIZED CAN WITH A VERY LONG TUBE THAT IS INSERTED UP THE DRAIN PIPE.
THE CONTENTS ARE RELEASED INTO THE BOX WHERE IT EXPANDS AND FOAMS UP AND EVENTUALLY DRAINS OUT.
    IT KILLS THE ALLERGENS.
ONE SUCH PRODUCT I KNOW WORKS WELL IS CALLED KOOL-IT BY LUBEGARD
    SELLS FOR ABOUT $14.00

What you need to do is get an odor removing spray, febreeze, lysol, one that will kill bacteria, and odors. Start your Jeep, turn on the Air conditioning, and spray the odor remover into the vents below the windshield wipers while the air conditioner is running. the air conditioning system takes air in from the outside through these vents, cools it, then blows it throught the vehicle. If you do this, the odor remover will go through the system and get rid of any odors in the ventilation unit.

I agree with everyone below… plus, if your Jeep has AC, you want to make sure the tube that drains the evaporator case is not plugged up. If it is, you need to unclog it. If watrer builds up in the case you get a lot of mold growth and it really stinks.
