What Could Be Wrong I’ve Replaced The Alternator & Battery But..
Posted in Headlight Bulbs | Asked on Sep 27, 2011I have a 2004 Honda Civic, whenever I would be stopped at a stop light or something my engine would kind of get louder like it was working harder and then fade back down to normal and my headlights would dim down then go back to regular so I had my alternator checked and was told it needed replaced. I got a brand new alternator put on, I had a brand new battery put in..and it’s STILL doing this. Would could be wrong? any ideas? it has 83,XXX miles..

Hmm if your engine is getting louder it could either be the fan belts activating or the engine is revving higher meaning something is turning on and taking power from the engine’s crank. If you already checked the alternator and the battery try checking anything else hooked up to the crank. Maybe a timing belt problem or your water pump is having troubles causing your car to heat up and your thermostat notices this and turns on the fans. I dunno, try going to a different mechanic?
I could possibly be a worn timing belt causing an engine flutcuation that could cause the symptoms such as a weak alternator or battery.
OR
for the gets louder part, i could be a potential vaccum problem that may cause the engine fluctuation.
Rotten connection somewhere , some of those cars have a external charge regulator clean the terminals . along with the engine to body earth leads
It is normal for batteries not to charge at idle with the lights on, so the dimming and brightening are normal for the engine speeds. The abnormal part is the cycling of the engine speed at idle.
Idle hunting is a favorite hobby of Honda cars. The usual cause is a bubble in the coolant that drives the cold idle valve nuts. If you look at the housings where the radiator hoses attach to the engine you should see a nipple like a brake bleed nipple. Open that half a turn (engine cold) and close it when a steady stream of coolant comes out. Top up the radiator and see how it goes.
