1998 Honda Civic Shutting Off While Driving/Lights Dimming/Won’t Restart PLEASE HELP

Posted in Headlight Bulbs | Asked on Apr 23, 2011

About a month and a half ago my check engine light came on and my speedometer stopped working. A short while later I noticed my headlights, dashlights, radio lights, etc. beginning to dim and my car losing power. I immediately went to a mechanic who replaced my alternator. Everything was fine(except my speedometer)About 2 weeks later I parked my car and it wouldn’t start. I replaced the battery the next day and it was fine. Then last week i took a 55 mile or so trip and my car broke down about 7 miles off the interstate. My car began shaking like it was going to stall and my headlights/dashlight were dimming. My radio shut off completely. When I turned my headlights OFF though my car was fine. But when I turned them back on it shut off completely and wouldnt restart. I had it towed and a mechanic replaced a fuse. About 4 days later it broke down again. An alternator was just put in yesterday but last night I noticed the same symptoms so I raced home and havent driven since.PLEASE HELP!

Have you checked the ignition coil?
You can get it checked at no charge at Auto Zone.
    Good luck.

Have you thought about selling it or calling in a priest

My Civic 98 did the same thing at one time; shake then stall. It turned out to be the distributor. I read that having the Air Conditioner on has a tendency to draw moisture into the distributor and perhaps shorting some of the electrical components inside. Did you also have your air conditioner on during the incident?

A new replacement distributor could cost about $280 and is fairly easy to unbolt and replace from the front hood.
