6v Battery Replaced With 12v

Posted in Headlight Accessories | Asked on Sep 3, 2010

My motorcycle has a 6v system, the year after has a 12v, not that it matters. I can’t find a battery for it anywhere, but I have found a 12v battery for it, and I find them all over. If I were to put a 12v battery in what kind of damage would that do to my engine? I know it may not stay charged, but I’m pretty sure it will if I kick start it. The bike has no accessories or turn signals, all the alternator runs is the headlight and tail light. I just need something in it with enough juice to kick start it, the current battery holds no charge at all. Before I do though, I wanted to see if it would damage anything or what’s the worst that could happen. Thanks in advance..

Considering that all your electronics and your bulbs are only 6 volts it will probably take a few seconds to blow any fuses you may have and only slightly longer to blow your lights. Within 1 minute your alt will fry as well. I find it hard to believe you cannot find a 6 volt bike battery anywhere. Unless you live in the bush , you should be able to find one at most bike shops or atc dealers. But have a look below, they usually start at around $15 and up
