Terrible Gas Mileage For 2002 Ford Mustang
Posted in Engine & DriveTrain | Asked on Sep 14, 2011My 2002 Mustang has only been getting about 14 mpg — terrible gas mileage! It’s a 3.8 V6, and has 49,000 miles. I had a tune-up, hoping that would help, but it hasn’t. The air filter is new and I get regular oil changes. It is running fine, it has plenty of power, so it’s not acting sluggish or stalling (making me think it’s not the oxygen sensor). The tires are relatively new and inflated properly.
What should I do? I don’t know why it’s getting such bad gas mileage. When the car was new I used to get 17 or 18 mpg, but 13 or 14 mpg is just so bad. I can barely drive 200 miles on a tank of gas! Yes, all my driving is city driving, but still.
I had a tune-up a month ago, so I have changed the spark plugs. And my tire pressure is fine and I check it.

You should try so gas system cleaner next time you fill up…reguarly check you air pressure in your tires or even switch to nitrogen in them as it will add up to a 6% increase in gas mileage.
I drive a mustang gt,and get better mileage than that!!do you drive more in town?when i do,i turn the a/c off-and try changing your spark plugs, let me know how it goes-and good luck
It may not be all the cars fault. I have noticed a decline in the quality of gas available today. Try stepping up a grade, it may pay for the difference. Also you might try HYPERMILING for better mileage,

Its probably not your car, but you might want to dump a high quality injector cleaner into the tank. The gasoline quality is getting worse by the day and the weather is getting hotter. Take it out of town and blow the cobs out as well it could be getting carboned up and that will affect mileage as well. Good luck!!!
Yea the gas quality is what is to blame here I used to get my gas from wawa until I noticed that I started getting worse MPG, I started going to Sunoco and I get at least 1-3MPG better than I did. Also installing a Cold Air Intake into your car will also improve your gas mileage by at least 1MPG and get a Tornado fuelsaver, It is recognized by the EPA to actually increase your gas mileage. And if cleaning your fuel injectors doesn’t work maybe you should change the fuel filter or replace the Fuel injectors with ones that use as little gas as possible. I have a 2000 Ford Mustang 3.8L V6 and i get on average 20-23MPG, With gas going higher and higher I’ve been open to try all sorts of things like the Intake which has helped and I am going to get one of those Tornado fuel savers and some ethos.
