White Smoke Coming Out Of Muffler And Overheats
Posted in Internal Engine Parts | Asked on Feb 3, 2012I have a 1993 Honda Civic Ex, it has been giving me problems lately. It overheats and white smoke comes out of the muffler? Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it? I do not want to take it to a mechanic. I want to fix it myself.

Sounds like a head gasket, its a pretty involved job to change it out and the shop would be able to test for cracks in the head and see if it is warped or not.
If you are seeing oil mixed with your antifreeze, or the other way around, it could be a head gasket. Gasket repairs are definitely not easy to do by yourself, but if you chose to do it yourself, make sure to get a repair manual for your car, (preferably a factory manual otherwise Haynes or Chilton’s). Also, you’d need a torque wrench so that you don’t over-tighten and ruin the new gaskets.
Good luck fixing it but you can if you know how. you will have to pull the head and replace the gasket.
Pull the head and check engine and head for cracks. you can see if they are warped if you put a ruler on the flat surface. if they are off at all, you have to get the head planed flat. if you install a warped head on the engine…. your engine will blow up again sooner or later.
