What Caused My Car Engine To Stop While Driving
Posted in Internal Engine Parts | Asked on Mar 27, 2011I believe to have left a light turned on inside the car for 3 days. Yesterday the car wouldn’t start so I jump started it. After letting the engine run for 3 minutes and then finally driving off, the engine stopped after 40 second drive. I tried jump starting again but wouldn’t start anymore.

You should of left your car running for approx 15mins so that the battery has some life in it when you drive off.
Now because it wont start you will have to ring your insurance company and ask then if they can jumo-start your car. (free if you have comp insurance and home start) just ask.
Jump start it again drive to any shop or parts store ask them to check charging system most places its free and then you know if you got a problem on takes 5 minutes maybe to know but it takes like30 minutes to recharge a dead battery if everything is working right wouldnt start clean battery cable charge battery either by leaving jumper car hook to it for 30 minutes or removing it and take to a shop few hours canbuy a battery charger about 30 bucks walmarts they come in handy
Battery is probably completely out of juice. Might have ruined it. It needs to be put on a charger to find out, but it’s probably toast.
The alternator out-put voltage needs to be checked as well as the battery voltage eirst with the car off then with it running.
If you would have included the year make and model of your car we could have made several other suggestions of things to check.
You probably just need to charge your battery longer, you may need to check the distilled water level in the battery to make sure it will take a charge. if it is low, it will not charge.
let the battery charge while the car is running for about ten minutes before driving. ( the altinator needs to charge the battery.)
you need to then let the battery charge for an additional 10 minutes. you can do this while driving,
if it still cuts off your altinator is probabaly bad
Sounds like the alternator is not sending a charge to the battery. The jump gave you enough juice to run for a while, and then died. If the battery was bad, it wouldn’t have absorbed the charge from the jump so easily. You can test the alternator by getting the battery charged, reading the voltage before you start the car, and then again while the car is running. If the voltage is not about a volt or more higher while running than while off, you probably have a bad alternator or at least the wiring from the alternator is shorted.
Good luck!
I don’t think it i a battery issue. it has to do with the oxygen sensor or the caty converter. most common in car stalling while driving.
Out of 7 answers, non are on the money. The thing you need to know about are TVS’s, Transient Voltage Spikes.
TVS’s are produced during jump starting and can cause irrevocable damage to electronics and onboard computers, especially if you use jumper leads without high speed suppresion.
The other major cause of this problem is that the alternator output at full tilt can exceed the rating of the fusible links so that they burn out as soon as the jumper leads are disconnected.
The best thing to do is remove the battery from the car and properly recharge it overnight. Check all the fusible links using an Ohmeter and repair as necerssary.
Reinstall the battery making sure ALL connections are clean and tight. If the car still does not start seek professional help from an auto electrician to minimise further damage to the system.
Ran out of gas
It sounds to me as if fuel pump failed. he gentleman whom said to remove battery charge and reinstall is right on the money. (jump starting will cause spikes in voltage and amperage very bad for your electrical components) ry his advise first and test fuel pump second if it cranks if not check your starter or relay.
