Mercury Flathead Engine Identification

  • Mercury On 255th 4 Flatheads – there is a Part / ID number to see on the block, that is, in fact, a 255 or other smaller Flathead? The attempt to determine, even if the engine was early or late ’49 ’49 ’53 built by. . One engine I have is in a ’50 Merc and it has the 8.5 belts and pulleys on them – would that be by a truck a few years?

      Flatheads of gthis vintage can be identified by numbers cast into the cylinder heads. 8BA designates a Ford block, and 8CM identifies the engine as a Mercury.
