this will be a somewhat time consuming job.
basically the dash harness has quick disconnects at both ends [and some in the middle for heater/air conditioning unit] after disconnections are made to electrical and vacume lines the whole dash can be unbolted and removed [actual removal/installation is a 2 person job]
while the old dash is out and before the replacement is installed CAREFULLY inspect the quick disconnects between the two dashes [most likely everything will be the same but the time to check is now ,before the new dash is in place]
note 1. the vin number of the old dash will need to be removed and installed on the new dash.
there may be laws in your state governing this operation.[check with your state police before transferring vin plate] [they may send a trooper out to do the actual change, this minor headache will become worth the trouble if truck is later sold]
note 2. dash fires generally happen because someone installed an aftermarket item improperly,
however once a fire starts and wires start melting together other harness’s may become affected a great distance away from where fire originated. so when everything is back together and the battery is first connected, please have at least two intelligent people standing by [one by the battery at the ready to disconnect main ground cable and the other to inspect for proper operation of lights and other components as they are initially turned back on, i.e. smoke watch.
good luck i hope you have a warm place to do all this.
p.s. keep a large A.B.C. rated fire extinguisher handy while testing
What Bob said except that you can do it all by yourself till you hook up the battery. Another thing that I do to help make things easier is to take several pics all the way thru the project so if I get stumped, the pics will help. Just be patient and don’t rush.
