What Would Make A Vehicle Sluggish.

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Aug 18, 2010

I have a 1985 Ford Bronco II. It has been sitting in a pastuer for 10 years. It is very sluggish when accelerating and it struggles going uphill. It also can not get up above 60 mph. The average speed I can go without pushing it is 45-50 mph. This is my daily driver and I have to drive on the highway everyday. We rebuilt the carb, put fresh gas in it, new fuel filter and pump, new fuel line, new spark plugs and wires, new distributor cap and rotor, new muffler, cut off the cat, and it still will not perform right. It also smokes very badly. I think it has a blown manifold gasket but I’m not for sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look in the backseat, are there a couple of 300 lb people in the back?
If yes, then I’ve solved your problem

In a pasture for 10 years? Jeez. Well, check if there’s are anything living inside it. Also, look for corosion in the cables connecting the battery. I don’t know much about car mechanics so that’s all I can tell ya :(

What kinda of smoke blue? You might have blow-by which means low compression. Also thoughs trucks are not super powerful to begin with but I think you should have the torque to get up hills. Maybe your transmission. You might just have low gear so it wouldn’t be too fast-but it should have better acceleration. Those “trucks” only ever had 115hp and the diesel 4 only had 85hp.

Sounds like a set of plugs and wires would do the trick but you already did that, I would go over your timing and make sure all the cylinders are firing. You may have a dead cylinder which would explain a lot. Also i would get you intake make sure nothing is restricking the airflow. I’m not positive but i think that has a 4 barrel carb so make sure all 4 are working properly.
    Hope this helps
