What Is Causing My Car To Accelerate In A Jerking Manner

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Jul 1, 2010

Car: 1999 Mercury Tracer, 2.0L 4-Cyl.
Car starts and idles fine. Hesitates to accelerate and sometimes has a jerky or jumpy acceleration. Check engine light was blinking yesterday and today. But I went and had the computer checked and there are no trouble codes in the system. I don’t know if it is the spark plugs or distributor cap, because there are no problems at idol, only when accelerating. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH A COUGAR AND I REPLACED THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE FROM THEN ON.HPOEFULLY THATS IT.

Used to have this with a 1989 Mazda Astina but only when low on fuel. For some reason, about 20km before the fuel light came on it would start jerking when taking off.
I just made sure I filled up when I got to 1/4 full. I replaced the spark plugs which helped but didn’t totally fix it. Just one of those quirks I guess.

    Sorry can’t help more!

check the tranmission, I have an olds97, it idled really good until I got on the highway, it would start to jump and hesitate when I would accelerate and temp would go up.

Well your first problem is that you’re driving a Ford product.

Here’s what you should do … remove the radiator cap, then drive a new Chevrolet under it, problem solved. Haha

It can be dirty- points in the distributer, leads from the distributer to the plugs or maybe a plug is short.Go to the electrician or a mechanic to get them cleaned or changed(in case of spark plug)
