Jeep Cherokee Starting

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Jun 3, 2011

I have a 98 jeep cherokee 4.0 and whenever I go to start it cold I have to crank it for about 10-15 seconds before it turns over. After its been started up all I have to do is turn key and it fires right up. I changed out all the spark plugs, (and gaped them properly) Wires,Cap and rotor and it didnt seem to make a difference. It almost seems as if its a bad crank shaft sensor but it eventually turns over. Does anyone know what it could be?Anyone else experience this problem? Its not really much of a problem to me just more of an inconvenience. Thanks for all of the answers.

To be honest I owned a 1988 jeep cherokee in high school. It did the same thing and after investing almost every dime i had, the issue was still present I just chalked it up to a jeep 4.0 thing and drove it to over 250,000 miles until i sold it to my father. My advice is to just let it be save yourself the headache and money and just enjoy your jeep!

My 96 Grand Cherokee is just the same. I put it down to leakdown in the fuel pump which takes time to build up again at cold start. Like yours, it goes fine for the rest of the day so I wouldn’t worry about it.

    Hope this helps.

Try some fuel line cleaner the next time you fill up..gas seems to be a problem, try a higher octane, or an octane boost, if cleaning the fuel line, and high octane work, then skip the octane boost..it’s not the vehicle then, it’s the gas.

    Hello,
My Jeep sometimes has the same issues. I’m not too sure about it, but it does eventually start after a while of cranking away. It does kinda scare my passengers, though, who think I’ve just ran out of gas. Good luck,
