Is There An Easier Way Of Getting My Car To Start Without Taking It To A Garage

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Mar 23, 2011

I have a 2000 Ford Focus with 155k miles. I just got it out of the shop last wk to have timing belt and valves rebuilt. Now the key won’t turn in my ignition.. I tried jerking the wheel back and forth.. jiggling the gear shifter and pumping gas/brakes.

Autozone said that a “key switch” will have to be replaced in a ford dealership bc they have to disarm my anti theft system and reprogram a new key to my ignition. This is going to be very costly.

Is there another way to maybe rig it to work for awhile? Or something else I could do to avoid another expensive garage bill? Like just pay my uncle to replace the ignition maybe?

I just bought an ignition for a similiar car (the wagon). I paid $49 for it from O’reilly Autoparts. Dis-connect the alarm completely (at the fuse) and buy an aftermarket kit such as autopage (about $50 on Amazon.com). IF your Uncle can do it, I say go for it. If in doubt, call a locksmith, but shop around for pricing. Most locksmiths will charge around $30-$50 to do the job.
