I Have A 2001 Chevrolet Venture Mini Van With 85,000 Miles. If It Gets Below 18 Degrees, It Will Not Run.

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Aug 10, 2010

The head lights are bright, dash lilgts are on, turn the ignition key and nothing happens. Cannot hear any starter turning, nothing. When the temperature warms up, it runs, and starts great. Could some temperature senser be causing this problem? I am open to any suggestions on this problem.

even though manufacuers make recamendastions as to when to have cars tuned up its been my pratice to do this on a anal peiroid for thay recamend 100k for plugs and that may be fine and dandy for cars that dont face the harsh climantic temp diffraces that one in real life face such as a diffreance of say from 85 dergest to a minus 45 below is quite a difrence so perhapes you might like to have your venture mini van get a tune up new plugs cap wires plugs air cleaner and fuel fielter each and ever fall befor the winter wether comes

I would probably buy one of those portable battery jumpers and put in your car…….it seems its just to cold and a little extra jump probably helps.

Sounds like a problem with the “security system” Pats Key system. A small piece in the ignition switch will not contact often times when it is cold. Have cured some by spraying contact cleaner into key hole and putting key in and out. Oil or grease thicken when cold and prohibit contact, That’s why you should never spray a ignition switch with WD 40 or ant oil or grease product. The oils just off your hands over time Is enough.

That’s a tough one, lets try this anyways don’t cost nothing. might be a worn out switch, like the neutral safety switch or ignition switch. When its cold its not making connection, try this apply the emergency brake if it still works if not hold the brake pedal. turn the key to running position, take the shifter handle and pull it down to low gear and back to park, do this a few times. Leave it in park and try it, if it starts the neutral safety switch is worn. Now the ignition, turn it back and forth from ACCESSORY to running position a few times, then try that if it starts that’s worn out. And if all else fails have the starter checked.
