it is safe to use starting fluid its just only don’t use to much there could be a bigger problem if you use to much.

Veggie oil isn’t as quick starting as deisel.

That’s just a fact of life.

Spraying gasoline wouldn’t work because you don’t have spark plugs and your compression is over 30 to 1. The gas would either fire prematurely or not at all. Same with starting fluid.

If you have dual tanks, you can put deisel in one and veggie oil in the other and change tanks a few miles before you put it to bed at night, and in the morning it will start on the Deisel, and you can switch over to run on Veggie oil all day.

If you don’t have dual tanks, you’re just going to have to figure out how much deisel you have to run in combination with the veggie oil so the starting problem isn’t so bad.

It’s a compromise, but until the manufacturers resolve the issue on the engineer’s drafting table, you can’t have it in your garage.

please, do not use starting fluid, espcially gas .You risk doing serious damage to the engine espcially prolonged use. Have your service tech check the glow plugs, they probably need to be replaced. Also have the injectors checked and replace if needed.
Those 5 cylinder merz engines are a true work horse and just a little routine maintenance they will run forever. I bought my 84′ with 228,000 miles on it (just getting broken in)… it is the most reliable and easiest car to work on that i ever had…..good luck…..
