Help With A Ford Diesel…..any Ford Mechanics Out Here

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Aug 19, 2010

Own a 2002 ford f-350 with a 7.3 liter diesel engine. do you know where I could find a colored wiring diagram for the motor?
the glow plug sensor module was replaced a few weeks ago, since then it has not been shifting right and today the heater bower motor was in the off position and the motor began running on high. I shut the truck off, let it sit for a minute or two and the engine started to turn over and the keys were in my pocket!!! it did this twice. then I noticed smoke comming from by the fuel filter now it won’t do anything! any ideas on where I should start looking?…..please don’t just comment by saying take it into the shop…it goes in on thursday, if I can’t figure out what is wrong first.
thank you all for your advice! I took it in to the dealer, figured way to many variables in diagnosing myself. the starter froze up, tech installed new starter and it tried to start itself again….so they found a starter sensor on the transmission that was the cause of all of it…they replaced it and all is working for now. at a cost of $700 bucks. and they didnt charge me much for labor go figure it was out of warranty by 3 months! I wonder if they intentionaly make these trucks to last only when the warranty is in effect?

You can most likely go to the dealer and they will print you out a wiring diagram….normally at no cost. Go to the parts counter for this.

What you describe sounds really odd…I’d look at the gpsm and see if by some chance a wire didn’t get pinched.

I have never heard of a problem like yours…but coincidental that you changed one item and all of this goes wrong….odd I would say.

    Hope this helps

You can get the diagram from the dealer ship.Sounds like you have a wire crossed. the best thing to do is ask them for a diagram. It isn’t really a great idea to mess with the wiring unless you are really familiar with it.
    Good luck

Ford has a big problem with water leaks at left upper windshield. Trouble is..water ends up on fuse box. This causes all sorts of odd events electrically. Sounds like your problem has become advanced..but the root cause may be water in fuse box. Any water on right floorboard? Its a telltale if so.

Something is apparently shorting out..check for burnt wires near the fuel bowl first .

But unless you want to pay for the access online from websites like alldatadiy.com , you are outta luck and will require a mechanic shop as without looking at it, I can’t tell you what burnt (as the starter relay is on right front fender well If I remember correctly) and something would have to backfeed to cause the starter to turn over

I agree with the other posts. What I would like to add, is that I don’t think it would be wise to touch ANYTHING that has to do with the glow plug system on that truck. The amount of amerage that goes through that circuit is enough to LITERALLY fry you!!! Which module was replaced? The IDM or the PCM? I think you’re referring to the IDM (Injector Driver Module). Those have commonly failed due to the above mentioned water intrusion. But this is DEFINITELY something that needs to be diagnosed by a Ford Diesel tech. DO NOT touch ANYTHING on the engine at this point. Doing so may only prolong the diagnosis process for the servicing tech. Make sure to provide as much detailed information as possible. This problem is already going to be enough of a headache to the tech that has to diagnose the concern, so ANY bit of information is going to help. Sorry to hear about your situation.

I have a 2003 f250 with 6.0 diesel. Try to disconnect all battery terminal and let stand for 20 minutes. re-connect bateries and try. After reconnecting batteries computer resets itself automatically. If that don’t work you’ll have to have you computer checked out,it might be defective. good luck
