Diesel Hard Start

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Aug 6, 2010

I have a 1993 Ford F250 Diesel 7.3L Non-turbo. I am having a very hard time starting it when it is cold. I have had the entire glow plug system replaced and it all works perfectly. Once the truck gets started it has no issues. Upon a warm start it also has no issues. I have burned out starters and glow plugs trying to get it to start when it is cold (even 40deg F).

Any ideas on what to do to fix this? My last idea is replacing the entire fuel system, but at the tune of $2000 I may just have to get rid of the truck before that.
Have a block heater, but can’t always plug it in.

NEED TO INSTALL A BLOCK HEATER FOR THE ANTIFREEZE SO THE BLOCK STAYS WARM AFTER YOU SHUT THE MOTOR OFF YOU CAN PLUG IN THE MOTOR TO KEEP THE COOLANT WARM AND THIS WILL HELP START IN COLD WEATHER…

yup, you need a block heater

Sounds like the fuel advance is not working on the injector pump. As the engine warms up you should hear a click & the engine will run smooth.
Take it to a shop that specializes in diesel injection systems.

Sounds like an injection pump problem if there’s no fuel system air leak (usually mountains of exhaust smoke when it finally fires).
Pump – could be advance or fuel delivery related.

Might consider running it over to a competent diesel fuel injection person/shop for at least an overnight stay…

Hint: check, check and recheck for an air leak.

A common starting problem on these is an air leak in the fuel system. Have it checked by a good diesel mechanic, and ask specifically about testing for a compromised fuel line on the injector pump. Many mechanics dont check, or miss it entirely because it is so small, but it is the most likely problem.
