Car Wont Start After A Rebuilt Head
Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Aug 16, 2010My car has just had a rebuilt head put on it with a graphite headgasket, i have checked, rechecked, and checked several times again that everything is plugged in and connected correctly. I have checked and rechecked the timing of the cam and the ignition more times that i wish to remember. And after all of it the car wont start an when it does it rough idles and runs like it was before i got it all fixed. It blew a head gasket before but thats all and since then its had the head rebuilt, had a new distributor cap put on, new rotor button, new spark plug leads, and new spark plugs. I know its getting fuel and spark and there is nothing bocking up the intake.
Forgot to say its a 1988 mx6 F2T, bottom end only has 184xxx on the clock and its not boosted, and its stock other than the 2.5″ exhaust and a port and polish.
I have worked for 4 day on the car with no luck and tried everything suggested to me and everything i can think of and nothing seems to work.

It sounds like you got everything covered, when you set the timing chain, the number one piston needs to be up on TDC of the compression stroke. You can have the cam and crank set and it looks right, but you have to make sure that #1 piston is up.
i once worked 2 days on a car engine [rebuilt] ..couldn’t figure it out…my friend walked in and pulled distributor out and put it in 180 degrees opposite…i had is @ss backwards….assume nothing…plug wires crossed? other simple fix…good luck
i do hope you have replaced the plug leads in the correct firing order, just an idea
Is it your original head that was rebuilt or is it another head? The reason I’m asking is because I once had to sort out a similar problem on a MX6 (Mazda?)
It turned out that the replacement head was not exactly the same as the original one and the original intake manifold of the car did not fit as it was suppossed to. It sucked some air between the head and the intake manifold causing it to run very bad.Get a can of quick starting fluid or something similar and spray that onto the joint between the intake and the head with the engine running. If it is sucking in some air the engine note will change when it sucks in the spray.
Did you bolt the head on and then rotate cam and/or crank to align the timing marks?
That is an interference fit engine. If you rotate the crank separate from the cam you will bend valves.
Do a compression check to see.
