924 1987 Porsche Not Firing
Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Jun 23, 2010My porsche burnt up when i tried to start it it burnt all under the hood i rewired everything and bought new parts but the coil is not firing and not sending spark of to the distributor but when i turn the key to the on position the coil wire gets fire could the key switch be the cause of this problem when i turn it to crank it its not giving any power to the coil wire and could i wire the coil up direct or bypass the key some way to see if this is the problem
when i turn the key switch on in the car and then get out of the car to check and see if the poisitive wire on the coil is getting fire it by tapping it to a ground on the body i see a tiny spark but when i get in the car and turn the car over it gets no spark. could this be my key switch doing this or is it any way to bypass the ignition and hook the coil wire up direct so that i can make sure that it is the ignition giving me the problem

This vehicle is not for the DIY mechanic I would recommend you take it to a mechanic who specializes in Porsche!
there is a shorted wire somewhere. have it checked by a certified mechanic/electrician.
Did you check that you have fuel?

It’s hard to answer your question without more information. Do you have pressure in the fuel system? Have you checked fuses for the ignition and fuel systems? Your ignition (key) switch could be the problem but there are also several other possibilities from your description and it would be tough to write up something for them all.
If you’re not comfortable digging into this, you’ll need to take it to a good mechanic. Keep in mind that the 1987 924 has the same engine as the 1987 944. It’s really a pretty good car.
Call MacGuyver. He can fix it with a bottle of hairspray, a Bic lighter a rubber band and an old magazine.
probely just a bad coil but if i were you i would invest in a multi reader in stead of grounding it out it could cause damage to a lot of things even your self
I had a 924 and I know it may sound simple & silly, but check your ground wire on your battery. They were prone to being faulty. I was having trouble w/mine, replaced the ground and things were find. Mid-America is a good place to find OEM and repo parts.
Good luck
