2001 Chevrolet Malibu Wont Start

Posted in Ignition Systems | Asked on Feb 18, 2011
Below is the question about 2001 Chevrolet Malibu Wont Start,

I started the car this morning and it fired right up and I drove to work. When I went to go to lunch it will not start. I turn the key over and nothing happens.

Problems I have had in the most recent past were that I would wiggle the shifter around in Park and it would turn over and start. That isn’t even helping today. I have tried to jump it through the starter and the starter just free spins like the solenoid isn’t kicking it in. But before I go changing the starter I am curious if there is a fail safe switch or something that could cause the solenoid not to engage as a safety type deal. I know the car has a neutral safety switch on it but not sure how to test it. Also I have tried 2 different keys and neither one will make it turn over. I also left the key in the ignition turned on for 15 minutes to erase the security fault if there happened to be one of them since I hear these cars have security systems that wont let it start if it doesn’t seem like the right key. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks…

  1. Robert F says:

If you think some safety feature is on, disconnect the battery cable for about 15-25 minutes and then re-connect and try. Also try jumping it? If that doesn’t work, test the battery, maybe it’s dead? If not, if you tap the starter with a screw driver or hammer (lightly) it usually works in starting it to get it at least to a shop.
