1991 4×4 Auto 4runner TDC HELP

Below is the question about 1991 4×4 Auto 4runner TDC HELP,

I am replacing the water pump on my 1991 4runner 4×4 V6 and i have to remove the timing belt since the water pump is hiding behind it. I know the engine needs to be at TDC. But i alrdy have mosy of it taken apart and i cann’t shift from park to N(yes the key is turn) there is zero power(sparkplugs and distributor unpluged batt out). i checked online and i saw a few people say for automatics it doesn’t matter if your in park or N . is this true or will i really mess somin over in my tranny? Thanks

    WILL NOT AFFECT TRANS. THE SAME THINGS HAPPEN IN BOTH RANGES EXCEPT PARK LOCKS THE DRIVESHAFT

    It dose not matter if it is in park or not you dont have to re time the engine just mark the timing pulleys and the crankshaft before you remove the belt .. make sure you mark the pulleys and put a refrence mark on the engine right behind the pulley (draw a line across the pulley and onto the engine) make sure the engine dosent move if it dose just realign your marks you put and reinstall the belt…

    Correct, the motor will turn fine in P or N with no damage to the tranny. With no power you will need to turn the bolt in the middle of the lower pulley with a socket to set TDC. Hope this helps.
