1972 Chevy 4 WDK20 Custom Deluxe 350 4 Barrel Rochester Running Very Rough

Below is the question about 1972 Chevy 4 WDK20 Custom Deluxe 350 4 Barrel Rochester Running Very Rough,

It is a converted 350 – low miles on rebuild. It began to run progressivly worse than it started, it sounds like it may be missing. We have a complete tune-up, plug cable (male to re-check wires for fault) cap, rotor, plugs, fuel and air filters. My husband can work on cars and replacement of parts such as brakes, pumps, etc., as far as diagnosis, he is not a mechanic by profession. I think maybe the dealers themselves could be bad and needs replacing. I do not think it carberaton, it sounds like it in the ignition / timing. It is a wonderful truck, everything is flat, new tranny, lift kit, new wheels and tires and engine rebuilt, and we will fix it, not to mention we only paid a further 6 months and 1 year insurance registration in October. We are at a loss and I do not want to take to a mechanic, unless we can not just smart this out. . . there must be something simpler. Any ideas? BitteMeine X has been allocated a mechanic and I learned when Rick took out the plugs, I examine each to each of them, they looked good, no coal, no oily, no damage, they were all the same. It started bad BEFORE the tune-up run, which is why there was to it. I guess all the answers are good, I think my first instinct dist. can only be right. He also has the timing with a light timning angepasst.Vielen Thanks, it ran for two years was great, super, then in about 2-3 months it was on progressivelly schlimmer.Vacuum dist. sounds like a possibility and has undergone a ignition coil sitting within 2 inches of Esch other could cuasing this? If so, why not earlier? Handyman, yes it has no points, was that carried out upgrade. New dist. . . Yes and coil, I Kow coils are cheap and very universal for tha car he ingeneral. All answers are so good, I can choose not easy. Extend these opportunities to see more.

Sounds like you have the right idea. Sometimes even the best mechanics use trial and error. Timing’s my guess.

  3. shake_zula42 says:

if it sounds like its missing but you checked and replaced the plugs and wires…check your timing. that might be the problem. try that.

  4. tommy h says:

try a timing light make sure it is good and timed distributor might be loose and turned a bit causing to progress miss

I would first check the choke on the carb. to make sure it is working right. If only doing it when you first start it. Also, check the gap on your plugs to make sure they are set right and that no plugs are fouled. Then check your timing.

If after you first finished your rebuild it ran ok and then got progressively worse your distributor could be loose or the points may have been set wrong and are wearing prematurely, also you might double check the plugs for tightness and plug wire connection and plug gap setting.

Hi I am not a mechanic, but my husband is. He said it could be a lot of things.
When you changed the plugs, where they all burning the same? You could tell by the color of them.
Check the play in the distributor, it could be misfire ring. If the distributor has play in it, if the shaft moves back and forth with a set of points in it. If it’s wore out it will close the points. Then should be replaced with HIE, GOOD LUCK !

did this prob start when you got it rebuilt does it get worse when hot or going up the rev range or when you wont to go
there othere things that it could be but we will start with the ignition
have you changed the coil or is it in the cap 1 of the probs that can tell you if it is that 1 is the engine lose power or miss when you put you go pedal down
you could have a vacum leak on the dissy to advance the timing for higher revs (did you take of this vac hose to time the car)
there is lots more just as a starter more info would be good

  9. BitburgerPilsMan says:

Check the vacuum. It should be steady and at least 18 on the gauge.

I’m thinking you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check all vacuum lines and associated diaphragms.

You could plug each line coming off the intake and see if it runs OK.

  10. THE-MOGUR says:

check carb base for leak by spraying wd-40 around it, smooth out at all? replace gasket. check distributor for excess side play. also check connections at control modual. or it may just need replacing, be sure to use dielectral grease when changing it.

  11. handyman says:

I would go to the salvage yard and get a complete distributor set and change the whole thing, there are a couple of things inside the dis that could be bad, and when ever you rebuild an engine or even put in a re-man motor most of the times these things get looked over and I would also replace the coil, while your at it i would replace the distributor with an hei dist and get rid of the points and condenser if you haven’t already done the upgrade.

once upon a time i had a harmonic balancer go bad…it caused a miss like a burned valve.
