Your timing is off get a good timing light find t.d.c. and start by retarding the rotor im sure its off or you blew out a power valve in the carb back pressure will blow out the valve so it will never be right is the carb a holly?
If you’re seeing fire out the top of the carburetor double check the firing order where the ignition wires go from the distributor to each of the spark plugs. Go on line to check the proper routing of the plug wires as they leave the cap. Roll the crankshaft over to TDC (top dead center). Check the position and condition of the rotor under the HEI cap. While facing the grille the rotor blade (hour hand) should be pointing @ 7:30.
Old black HEI distributor rotors are suseptable to burn-through.
