Below is the question about Olds 455 HELP…..,

I have an olds 455 with a four barrel holley carburetor…the engine was recently rebuilt and i think some oil fell into the exhaust pipe…but anyway the engine smokes really bad out of one pipe that is once the engine heats up, the caburetor also backfires when u stomp the pedal to the floor…when you take out a sparkplug it’s black and wet…i dont know wut the problem is carburetor, new wires, plugs, something if you know wuts wrong please help…give lots of detail…thanks….
the smoke is white coming out the exhaust, but water slowly drips from the tail pipe im guessing from the moisture of the smoke…

  1. Talon699 says:

Your biggest problem is the H word ( Holley) . Trash it and go back to a Q jet , or at least an Edelbrock. If you have oil smoke out one side of the exhaust you have other issues inside the motor, valve seals / rings, or poor ignition . Pull all the plugs and see if it isolated to 1 or 2 cylinders or they are all the same. Could be the engine has not broken in yet . Or possibly , it was hammered to hard and broke a ring. White smoke is oil , and black smoke is to much fuel

  2. Ford-man says:

Do a compression check, if you got a cylinder that’s 5-10% different than the others you could have broken rings , bad valve or just a bad guide seal .

  3. Marvin_g_33334 says:

Take a compression test – that will tell u .IF oil (fell) into the exhaust pipe {it would take a lot } It might smoke for a half hour until the muffler gets hot..U could have piston rings that weren’t positioned correctly – if it idles ruff , u could have a bent valve – or a valve seal broken ! Either timing is way off or a bad valve 2 cause backfiring through the carb.Is the smoke white ? [water] or is it blue? [Oil ]

Never heard of an Endelbrock but it does sound like you have internal problems inside the engine. I sure hope you got a warranty with that engine because you are going to need it.

  5. Roy B says:

Bad head-gasket and check the engine timing it may be off. You can check the timing with a timing light.

  6. Cliff The Mechanic says:

Hello, sounds like the fuel is not being burned in the cylinder, there are a lot of possibilities like weak spark, incorrect timing, float level in carb too high, bad carb intake cam match,i would look for bad ignition coil, spark timing module, pick up coil in the distributor,or an old school mechanic

  7. Gw says:

For everyone that does not understand, black smoke indicates oil burning, white smoke indicates excess fuel. Black and wet plug proves that. Backfiring indicates timing is off. Either by improperly installing the cam or distributor. Either way the ignition is to far advanced. As afr as whats causing the excess fuel that would be the carb is not “tuned” right. Or it severly needs an overhaul. As in having bad float or sticking needle in it. if its black smoke that indicates that oil is getting into the cylinders. Either by passing the oil rings due to improperly seating due to not breaking it in correctly or just not installed correctly, Or worse the engine itself was not rebuilt correctly. BAd valve guides could cause this problem. I agree, take a compression check on all 8 cylinders. If you have a 10%-15% difference in one or more of the cylinders then get it rebuilt or exchange it for another one. I personally do not think based on what you have said this engine was not set up correctly. hope this helps.
