Oil Pressure Switch Problem

Posted in Crank, Oil and Piston | Asked on May 17, 2010
Below is the question about Oil Pressure Switch Problem,

I have a 91 taurus sho, and after idleing for some time, the oil light just barely starts to flicker, after a little longer it will just blink at idle. if i just barely push the accelerator, it goes away. so im leaning toward the oil pressure switch. but i was wondering, would an oil pressure switch cause a 50 or so rpm change in idle when the light flicks? its a louder car and i can hear the idle fluxuate about 50 or so, and i dont hear any noises from the engine that would tell me its not getting enough oil pressure
i mean it has a loud exhaust

remove the switch and install a gauge, to verify oil pressure. could just be a bad switch.

the switch sounds like it’s working actually..

either the oil filter is plugged, or damaged where it can’t bypass, or it’s a fram.

Try changing the oil filter to a quality one, like Purolator, Wix, Motorcraft, Napa (wix).
use 10w30 oil in winter, 10w40 in summer.

Your best and safest bet is to have a oil pressure test done as soon as possible. It is an easy proceedure performed at any auto shop. All they have to do is remove your oil pressure sensor (sending unit) and apply a mechanical guage in it’s place to see your true oil pressure. I would say it’s the sending unit, but when you state it looses RMP when this happens you should get it tested asap before you loose an engine.

if it sounds loud then it,s not the pressure switch. the only thing the switch does is let you know the top of the engine is getting oil. it sounds more like the oil pump then the switch.
