How Do I Set The Timing Gear On A Briggs And Stratton Single Cylinder Small Engine

Posted in Crank, Oil and Piston | Asked on Jul 7, 2010

I had to replace the connecting rod and the big plastic gear fell out of place before I could note the positions of the gears. How do I get them properly aligned? On the big plastic cam gear I do see a marking, but what do I align it with?
I understand to align it with the crank gear. The plastic gear has a double mark, and on the crank gear there is a tiny recessed square set on its corner. Am I to assume that tiny square has to lie within the double mark? Sounds reasonable to me, and if so, then what else should I check to see to confirm that I’ve got it right?

You align it with the gear on the crankshaft, make sure its at top dead center first…
